The South African 1 oz Gold Krugerrand coin holds a rich history within the world of precious metals. Released in 1967, this gold coin was the first modern bullion coin to contain exactly 1 troy ounce of gold. 1 oz Gold Krugerrand Coin: The Gold Krugerrand coin is woven into the history of South Africa, and its contribution to the precious metals market. Introduced as the world's first modern bullion 1-ounce gold coin, the Krugerrand has played a pivotal role in shaping the way gold is bought, sold, and invested around the world. First minted in 1967 by the South African Mint, the Gold Krugerrand was named after Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic. 1 oz Gold Krugerrand Design. Paul Kruger's portrait graces the obverse of the Gold Krugerrand. Also included on the obverse is the text, "SOUTH AFRICA" and "SUID-AFRICA". The reverse depicts the springbok antelope, the national symbol of South Africa. The text "KRUGERRAND" is featured above the antelope, with the text FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD" below the animal. The Krugerrand is alloyed with copper, distinguishing itself from other gold coins with its distinct reddish hue. The 22-karat purity helps the coins be more durable and resistant to scratches, making them suitable for circulation. However, unlike traditional coins, Krugerrands were not intended for general use as currency but were primarily minted for investment purposes.
